Texas summers can be dangerous, especially for your heart. When the temperature
rises, your heart must work harder to keep your body cool. It pumps more blood into
your skin, and you lose water through sweat.

If you become dehydrated, your heart has to work even harder. This can be especially
dangerous for people with heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

According to the 2025 Dallas County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA),
heart disease continues to be one of the leading causes of death in Dallas County. That
makes it even more important to stay safe during the hottest months of the year. The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests these tips to protect your heart in
    the heat:

    • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, as well as a hat and sunglasses.
    • Drink water often, even if you are not thirsty.
    • Stay indoors or in the shade during the hottest part of the day, usually from 10
      a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Take breaks if you are working or exercising outside.
    • Never leave anyone in a parked, locked car.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also warns that some heart
medicines and blood pressure medicines can make it harder for your body to handle the
heat. Continue taking your medications exactly as prescribed by your healthcare
provider. If you have any questions or concerns about your medications, contact your
    care team.

Know the warning signs. Call 911 right away if someone has chest pain, trouble
breathing, confusion, faints, or stops sweating while their body temperature keeps
rising. Acting fast could save a life. Staying cool isn’t just about comfort; it can protect
    your heart.
