David Crowley pulled off a stunning Wisconsin Democratic governor primary comeback, edging Francesca Hong by roughly 3,000 votes. After dropping out and later getting back into the race, the Milwaukee County Executive edged Francesca Hong by roughly 3,000 votes, 39.8% to 39.3%. Dr. Robert Baker says Black women and people in Milwaukee helped drive Crowley over the top. His blunt assessment: “black women and the hood showed up for David Cwley, and that was the the big difference.” He also says Crowley’s support stretched beyond Milwaukee into parts of Wisconsin where many did not expect a Black candidate from the state’s largest city to perform so strongly. Roland Martin argues the result is another reminder that Black voters are strategic about electability, especially in a closely divided state like Wisconsin. “winning the primary ain't the same as winning the general election,” he says, pointing to the broader November stakes and the need for Democrats to build coalitions that can actually win statewide. The discussion also turns to what Democrats should learn from Crowley’s victory. Baker says the old Obama-era coalition and infrastructure are no longer there, and argues that Democrats need to embrace new Black leaders with authentic ties to their communities. Crowley’s win, he says, shows why Black voters remain central not only to the Democratic Party, but to the broader political culture.
