    On June 19, 1865, the remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received word of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, birthing what is known as Juneteenth. Following decades of advocacy, Juneteenth was marked as a federal holiday in 2021. But, there’s still pushback from lawmakers, including President Trump who believe it should be derecognized.
