For years, Black women were told success meant climbing the corporate ladder.

Now many are asking: climbing into what exactly?

Across professional spaces, women are openly discussing the emotional exhaustion of navigating workplaces that celebrate diversity in PowerPoint presentations but not necessarily in meeting rooms.

The term “corporate glow down” is trending online as women describe becoming more stressed, less healthy and spiritually drained despite earning more money.

One woman joked: “I got promoted and immediately developed eye twitching.”

Humour aside, the frustration is real.

Many Black women say they are increasingly prioritising flexibility, peace of mind and ownership over traditional corporate status. Entrepreneurship, portfolio careers and remote work are becoming more attractive than constantly code-switching in environments that still reward sameness.

There’s also growing resentment toward performative inclusion initiatives that look polished externally while employees continue experiencing bias internally.

Women are no longer impressed by a diversity panel and one Black History Month cupcake.

The modern career conversation is shifting from “How do I survive here?” to “Why am I sacrificing myself for this at all?”

And honestly, that question feels overdue.
