#TheBlackTable w/ Dr. Greg Carr: The Civil War Never Ended. How We Win It Dr. Greg Carr sits down with civil rights lawyer, political analyst, and Democracy in Color founder Steve Phillips to discuss his book How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good. Phillips argues that the central political struggle in the United States has never truly ended. From Reconstruction to voter suppression, from January 6th to modern attacks on democratic participation, he contends that the battle between multiracial democracy and white nationalism remains one of the defining conflicts of American life. The conversation explores the demographic transformation of the United States, the rise of what Phillips calls the New American Majority, and the continuing efforts to suppress the political power of Black, Latino, Asian American, Indigenous, and progressive voters. Drawing on decades of organizing experience, Phillips explains why voter mobilization, civic engagement, coalition building, and long-term organizing remain essential to building political power. Dr. Carr and Phillips also examine the legacy of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition, the unfinished work of Reconstruction, the role of white backlash in American politics, and the practical strategies being used in places like Georgia, Arizona, Texas, and beyond to expand democratic participation. Throughout the discussion, one question remains at the center: can the United States become a true multiracial democracy, or will the forces of white nationalism continue to shape its future?
