With a nimble flow and an energy that cannot be tamed, That Mexican OT proudly carries the torch for both Texan and Tejano traditions. The 27-year-old artist honors both heritages with his new song, “La Cumbia de Virgil,” which combines the Latin genre of Cumbia with speaker-knocking Texas rap. Rhyming over the oom-pah rhythm that defines Cumbia, OT delivers a fast-paced flow, switching effortlessly between English and Spanish: “Southside of Texas where we swangin’ and we bangin’/Ridin’ with my migos, throwin’ up that cuatro/And you better keep it cool cause this sh*t can get real wicked/I’m gonna call up my loco, my vato,” he spits. In the video, live today at 3pm ET, OT hosts a party with some of the baddest in Southeast Texas, smacking a piñata and indulging in every substance he can find.

Following recent singles “Need That” and “Still Virgil,” “La Cumbia de Virgil” helps pave the way for Sophie’s Son, OT’s next album. Named after the rapper’s mother, who passed away when he was only 8-years-old, the upcoming album refines OT’s simmering Texas sound, mixing personal reflections with the party-positive and witty music for which OT is known. Stay tuned for more announcements about Sophie’s Son, arriving in the coming weeks via Capitol Records / GoodTalk / Good Money Global / Manifest.

Sophie’s Son is the highly-anticipated follow-up Recess, OT’s 2025 album. Recess is home to singles like the Lil Wayne collaboration “Baby Mad At Me,” the twangy “Runnin,” and the South Texas collab “Accessories” ft. Peso Peso. Recently, OT dropped videos for Recess highlights like “Guidance” ft. Sauce Walka & Hogg Booma and “Serrio,” a Bankroll Got It-produced banger with a guest verse from Cali rapper YBE. Featuring additional guest spots from BigXThaPlugDenzel Curry, and more, Recess is available on all platforms via Capitol/GoodTalk/Good Money Global/Manifest

OT performed songs from Recess earlier in February at his unique hybrid concert event, called Third Coast Bucking.  Presented by Hooked Up Productions, Third Coast Bucking was a full night of live music and rodeo action, featuring performances from some of the Lone Star State’s favorite artists, preceded by with top tier bullfighting and bullriding from top rodeo athletes (and enthusiastic amateurs, like OT himself). Following performances by Paul Wall and country star Braxton Keith OT closed out the night with his scintillating set, delivering highlights from his career and bringing up Johnny Dang during his namesake song. Recently, OT finished a tour of Canada and the Northern U.S. with Yelawolf and Prof, and he plans to launch yet another tour later this year. Tickets for OT’s shows are available at ThatMexicanOT.net

    The Background:

That Mexican OT is making sure Texas has a seat secured at the rap table. The Bay City, Texas rapper has burst onto the scene with his unique mix of exuberant, confidence-filled bars and the truck-rattling sensibilities of prime southern rap, mixed with the experimentation of DJ Screw’s signature sludgy chopped-n-screwed sound.

He flaunts a sound that plays just as well globally as it does at the parking lot kickback. The Tejano rapper rose to fame off his legendary linkup with Houston royalty Paul Wall on “Johnny Dang” (300 Million+ Streams), which Pitchfork honored as one of the best 100 songs of 2023. He parlayed that success into his breakout mixtape Lonestar Luchador, which was heralded by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, HipHopDX, The Houston Chronicle, Passion Of The Weiss, and more.

Notching tens of millions of streams on hits such as “Hardest Ese Ever,” “Cowboy Killer,” and “Hit List” solidified him as one of the most exciting southern rappers on the come up. With his latest album, Texas Technician, That Mexican OT delivers on the fun and raucous sound that made him, while also showing off a meticulous desire to expand his range.
