More than two decades after being pushed out of the franchise they created, the Wayans family returns with the biggest opening in “Scary Movie” history

The Wayans brothers did not come back small. Scary Movie, the long-awaited reunion of the franchise’s original creative team, opened to $105.5 million globally this weekend, shattering every record the series had previously set and landing at number one at the worldwide box office.

The film earned $55 million domestically from 3,490 locations, topping the previous franchise domestic record of $49.7 million set by Scary Movie 4 in 2006. Overseas it added another $50.5 million across 53 markets, a figure 75 percent larger than any prior international opening in the franchise. The film ranked number one in 95 percent of its overseas footprint, with strong performances in the UK and Germany at $5.5 million each, Brazil at $5.1 million, France at $3.2 million, and Australia at $2.7 million. It also set all-time Paramount opening records in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia.

The film follows the return of the “Core Four,” Cindy, Brenda, Ray, and Shorty, who find themselves face to face with a suspiciously familiar masked killer while no horror franchise is safe from the parody treatment. Sinners, Get Out, M3GAN, Long Legs, and Weapons are all in the crosshairs, alongside Hollywood’s current obsession with reboots, requels, and legacy sequels.

What makes those numbers land differently is the backstory behind them. Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory are back as screenwriters and producers after more than 17 years away from the series they created, a separation that came after the Weinsteins pushed them out of the franchise following Scary Movie 2 in 2001. This time Marlon and Shawn also reprise their roles as Shorty and Ray on screen, joined by Anna Faris and Regina Hall returning as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks. Rounding out the ensemble are Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans, Gregg Wayans, Kenan Thompson, Carmen Electra, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, and Benny Zielke, with Michael Tiddes directing.

Late additions included Teyana Taylor and Michael send-ups shot after the Oscars, and a K-Pop animated sequence added at the eleventh hour. The Wayans have always kept budget in reserve for last-minute pick-ups to keep the film current, and it shows on a production that cost just $30 million total.

The marketing campaign matched the film’s energy. The launch trailer pulled over 410 million views in its first seven days, making it the second-biggest trailer debut in Paramount history. A Subservient Ghostface website generated 200 million views and 53 million site interactions. The original song “Hoes,” featuring Lizzo and Sexyy Red alongside the cast, went viral. Ghostface turned up at a Miami drag show, took over the Empire State Building, and hotboxed a giant glass box in Times Square with Marlon, Shawn, and Anna Faris. Social content across the campaign topped one billion views total.

The audience that showed up was a genuine cross-section. Latino and Hispanic audiences led at 37 percent, followed by white audiences at 36 percent, Black audiences at 21 percent, and other at 6 percent. The under-35 crowd represented 78 percent of ticket buyers, with 88 percent describing themselves as existing fans of the franchise and 90 percent having seen a previous installment.

All of this adds up to something the industry has been waiting on for years: proof that a comedy built for theatrical release can still move the culture. And with the film’s opening now on record, Marlon Wayans has already started talking about White Chicks 2.
