A bankruptcy judge has now rebuked St. Augustine’s leadership as years of financial turmoil, board secrecy, lawsuits, and unanswered questions threaten the future of the historic HBCU. The historic HBCU is in bankruptcy, students are not on campus this fall, jobs are being lost, and its interim president is working without pay while major questions remain about the university’s finances, governance, and future. Roland Martin and former national alumni trustee-elect Steve Williams examined a proposed real-estate advisory agreement involving the university’s 105-acre campus. Williams said the agreement lacks clear language protecting the campus and raised concerns about commissions that could reach as high as $7.5 million. Roland also noted that Bankruptcy Judge David Warren said he was “not overly impressed with the terms of the contract,” while Williams said he had never heard a judge admonish a board of trustees the way Warren admonished St. Augustine’s board. The pressure intensified when Roland displayed records showing St. Augustine’s received $34.9 million in COVID relief money and asked the question that still hangs over the university: “Where did it go?” He demanded a full accounting of how the money was managed and how a nearly 160-year-old institution went from operating classrooms, graduations, and homecomings to a campus with virtually no students. Williams said alumni have gone years without meaningful communication from the board and described alumni personally paying for campus upkeep, security cameras, lighting, and other needs while the university continues to deteriorate. Roland again challenged former and current board members to come forward, answer questions, and explain their decisions publicly. #RolandMartinUnfiltered #BlackStarNetwork #StAugustinesUniversity #HBCU #HBCUNews #BlackEducation #HigherEducation Black Star Network Partner: Chapter Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program.
