A sunset concert on July 17 that was headlined by Richmond Hill Queens Angels Caribbean Band (ACB) brought the rhythms of the islands to Denton Green Park in the Incorporated Village of Hempstead, much to the delight of a huge crowd that was treated to Soca, Reggae, Calypso, Chutney fusion, Bollywood flavors, and Afro Beats.

This is all thanks to Mayor Waylyn Hubbs Jr. of the Incorporated Village of Hempstead, who was on hand to welcome residents, thanking them for joining the afternoon revelry. Deputy Mayor Jeffrey Daniels, and trustee Noah Borroughs, also facilitated the summer event that has been a staple in the community for five years.

The ACB, celebrating its 32nd Anniversary since launching in 1994 in Richmond Hill Queens, showed its musical prowess, with Guyanese-born Vinod Bisram, and Vikash Misir, lead and second keyboardist, respectively, Jamaican-born Trevor on Drums, Little Riaan on keyboard, Guyanese-born Geeta Bisram, lead female vocalist, and, Dexter M. Trinidad-born, lead male vocalist, accompanied by Sound Engineer Guyanese-born VJ Bisram, revved up the park with two hours of infectious, memorable selections.

Dexter M took to the stage and sang more than 15 songs, including Caribbean legendary hits like "Ram Goat Liver" by Pluto Shervington; “Stirr It up” by Bob Marley and the Wailers; “Love you in Everyway” by Buju Banton; Carl Malcolm's “Hey Fatty Bum Bum," and Boris Gardiner's "My Commanding Wife.”

The soloist reminisced about the '60s and '70s music that he said Caribbean nationals grew up listening to, and still enjoy to this day. The jingles were so infectious that tiny tots, as young as age 4, and 5, took to the turf to show their motion.

He continued with a string of melodies, of  Sweet Soca top singles, by Kes the Band, like “Rum and Coca Cola”, “Coco Tea”, and others. The afternoon’s entertainment went on for two hours, with Afro Beats, and ended Bob Marley’s anthem - One Love.

Chutney Queen Geeta Bisram, in turn heated up the concert with sensational Chutney and Bollywood selections. She performed a Kanchan tribute set with the ever popular song “Kuch Garbar Hai” - a calypso/Hindi fusion.

Additionally, Geeta was joined by two little dancers on stage, as she joyfully entertained the crowd with a new trending Bollywood hit “Teri Batoon” and a Bollywood/Dancehall fusion, capping off her exciting performance with a Punjabi Dance Hit “London Thumakar.”

 “This is 32 years of consistency, enthusiasm, zeal, sacrifice, dedication, humility, simplicity, and total respect for the gift of music given us by the ACB family, daily," Vinod Bisram said to Caribbean Life.

Bisram thanked Mayor Weslyn Hubbs Jr., Deputy Mayor Jeffrey Daniels, and Trustee Tanya L. Carter for the opportunity to entertain residents for the past five years.

“When two 5-year-olds from Haiti and Jamaica parentage, and an energetic 96-year-old from Guyana danced the night away to the pulsating and unifying live band music of ACB, it is the simple but very meaningful heartfelt moments that gives us joy and satisfaction to continue doing what we have been doing for over three decades."

The band has a storied past, having performed in reputable venues like Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, and New York's Central Park.

The ABC accompanied and performed with Caribbean legends, including Musical Arranger and keyboardist Phillip Nichols, Calypso Rose, David Rudder, Dave Martins, Lord Laro, Lovindeer, Sundar Popo, Pluto Shervington, Edwin Yearwood, Biggie Irri, Guyana Baboo,  hit maker Terry Gajraj, and Rikki Jai, also on stage with the music makers.

The band has also entertained fans at the Nassau Coliseum, Trump Mark Hess Arena, Six Flags Great Adventure, Disney Amphi Theatre, Resorts World Casino, Floyd Bennett Field, and the Annual Guyana Folk Festival in Brooklyn.

It can rightly be said that the ACB has made its mark on the world stage, bringing along other musicians like Dylan Thomas (Saint Lucia), Marc Brooks (Trinidad), and Shailesh (Suriname).

The band will continue its Summer schedule with a massive Aug. 16 Queens International Food and Music Festival in Smokey Park on Atlantic Avenue. There will be a Sept. 12 date for Schenectady Caribbean Day near Albany, New York.
