Rising costs, thinner savings, and anxiety over Social Security are pushing some retirees back into the workforce—not for ambition, but survival. AARP reported in February 2026 that 7% of retirees age 50 and older had “unretired” in the previous six months, with nearly half saying their main reason for returning to work was to make money. That finding points to a growing reality: for many households, retirement income is not keeping pace with everyday expenses. The pressure is especially sharp for people nearing or already in retirement with limited savings. AARP has also found that 20% of adults age 50 or older have no retirement savings, while Federal Reserve data cited by Investopedia shows that 43% of households ages 55 to 64 have no money in retirement-specific accounts. Even among those who have saved, the median retirement account balance may not be enough to cover decades of housing, health care, food, transportation, and inflation. Social Security helps, but it often does not fully close the gap. The Social Security Administration set the 2025 cost-of-living adjustment at 2.5%, increasing the average retirement benefit by about $49 per month, according to AARP and SSA figures. That increase offered some relief, but many older Americans still face higher prices for rent, groceries, utilities, insurance, and medical care.
