Most people know Nzinga Imani as Angela, the bold and unapologetic fan favorite from Tyler Perry’s Sistas and Zatima. Her impact stretches far beyond the screen. Between acting, modeling, music, and entrepreneurship, Nzinga has built a career defined by authenticity, resilience, and creativity. As she enters a new chapter with new music, a growing career, and motherhood on the horizon, she’s showing there’s much more to her story than the character fans have come to love.

We sat down with the Zatima star to talk about the return of Season 4B, her debut single “Drown,” and the life-changing journey into motherhood. The sultry Afrobeat-inspired track marks a full-circle moment for Nzinga, who describes music as her first love and earliest creative outlet. Blending smooth vocals with themes of passion, vulnerability, and connection, “Drown” offers fans a deeper look into another side of her artistry. Watch the official music video for “Drown” below.

    The Evolution of Angela

As Zatima returns for Season 4B on Paramount+, fans are getting a more layered look at Angela than ever before. Known for her confidence and no-nonsense energy, this season strips some of that armor back and shows a more vulnerable, reflective side as she navigates personal challenges and shifting dynamics in her life. The conversation also lightened up as Nzinga reacted to fan theories about Angela’s zodiac sign. While she is an Aquarius in real life, she admits Angela carries strong Sagittarius energy, pointing to her boldness, sass, and the way she shows up in relationships with fire and confidence.

“We see her starting to show more vulnerability, starting to second-guess herself,” Nzinga reveals. “She’s internally dealing with sensitivities and questions about how she shows up in the world.”

Playing a character grappling with self-doubt was a unique challenge for Nzinga, who radiates a natural, unshakable confidence. “I had to acknowledge that this is not me; this is a character representing women across the world,” she explains. “I had to dig a lot deeper to find that vulnerability, and that was very difficult.”

Nzinga also addressed the complex storyline surrounding Angela’s weight loss journey this season, emphasizing the importance of showing the realities and consequences that can come with those decisions rather than presenting an easy fix. Fans often closely parallel the character to the Actress Nzinga herself, and she opens up about the complexities and depth involved in portraying the character. She also shared that the goal was to spark conversation and reflect experiences many women face, while allowing viewers to see the emotional and personal impact of those choices play out on screen.

From the Classroom to the Screen

Nzinga’s journey to the top of the Tyler Perry universe wasn’t overnight. Before the fame, she was a school teacher. She recalls with a laugh how her local clothing store would have a “rack ready” for her every Friday after work. However, her path wasn’t without trials. Nzinga shared the harrowing experience of losing everything in a house fire—a “breakdown” moment that she credits with forcing her to rebuild her life with absolute intention.

That resilience has paid off. Beyond the screen, she has become a force in the fashion industry, partnering with iconic brands like Lane Bryant and Fashion Nova. She isn’t just a face for these brands; she’s a creator, having designed sold-out collections for Fashion to Figure. She recalls a moment on a set where a staff member laughed when she stated her weight was 300 pounds. Instead of letting it shake her, Nzinga stayed present. Its an understatement what this type of representation means to thousands of fans who also embrace body positivity and feel pride resonating with her success.

“For the girls that look like me… [I want to show] that big girls wasn’t questioning our worth or our style,” she says.

    A Full-Circle Moment in Music

While audiences may know her best for her work on screen, music has always held a special place in Nzinga’s heart. Long before acting became her career, singing was her first creative outlet and the art form that allowed her to express herself most freely. The song is an Afrobeat-infused track that pays homage to her Guyanese heritage. The music video, produced with her partner, Atlanta artist K.Lindo, is a masterclass in sensuality and authenticity. Now, with the release of her debut single “Drown,” she’s reconnecting with that passion and embracing a side of herself fans haven’t fully seen before.

For Nzinga, returning to music feels less like a new venture and more like coming home. The experience has reignited a sense of joy and creativity that she says has always been part of who she is. As she continues to explore music, she also has her sights set on another dream: Broadway. With a background in musical theater, she hopes to one day combine her love for acting and singing on stage, bringing her career full circle in a way that honors every part of her artistry.

“Singing has always been my first love. My first creative outlet,” Nzinga says. “Returning to it feels like a full-circle moment of coming back to me.” With an EP due out later this year, Nzinga is ready to prove that her voice is just as powerful on a microphone as it is on a script.

The Next Chapter: Motherhood and Beyond

Life is currently imitating art in a beautiful and unexpected way. As Angela navigates new emotional dynamics on Zatima, Nzinga Imani is stepping into one of the most transformative chapters of her real life, preparing for motherhood. Expecting her first child with K. Lindo, she shared that pregnancy has completely shifted how she views her work, her time, and the way she moves through her career, making her more intentional about every opportunity she takes on.

“Knowing that this next chapter of bringing a baby into the world and that they get to be a part of the things that we’re creating… it just makes you more motivated to do more and to be more impressive. It reminds you that time is fickle and it’s moving.”

    The Legacy

When asked what she hopes people take away from her journey, Nzinga’s answer is as bold and unfiltered as she is. “I want to leave this earth empty,” she said. “I want to use every drop of talent God gave me and not hold anything back. I’ve never felt limited to one thing, and I want people to experience all the different sides of my creativity while I’m here doing it all.” Her vision is clear: to show up fully, evolve openly, and leave nothing on the table creatively or personally.

“It makes me a lot more intentional,” she says. “It makes you realize how quickly life happens. You can’t wait, you can’t keep postponing. Sometimes you just gotta go.”

With Zatima Season 4B streaming now and “Drown” climbing the charts, it’s clear that Nzinga Imani is nowhere near finished filling the world with her light.
