Millennial parents say they’re raising children without the “village” previous generations could rely on—but today’s grandparents are living very different lives too. In this 8 At The Table reaction, Amanda, Rico, Erin, Jada and Rome respond to a mother explaining why so many millennial parents feel overwhelmed by parenthood. Extended families don’t always live around the corner anymore. Her own parents live in Nigeria while her husband’s parents live in another state. At the same time, many households need two incomes, and paid childcare can be so expensive that hiring someone simply to have a night off isn’t realistic. But Jada introduces the other side of the argument: Grandparents have lives too. People in their 50s, 60s and 70s aren’t necessarily settling into the traditional grandparent role previous generations expected. They’re working, exercising, traveling, dating, finding love and sometimes remarrying. So what happens when millennial parents need a village—but Grandma and Grandpa aren’t available to be the village? And there’s an uncomfortable question underneath all of it: When you decide to have children, how much help should you reasonably expect from your parents? Should grandparents make sacrifices to help with their grandchildren? Or did they already raise their children—and now deserve the freedom to live their own lives? Parents: How much childcare help do you get from your family? Grandparents: Do you believe helping with the grandkids is part of the responsibility—or should your adult children figure childcare out themselves? That’s the comment battle I would intentionally create. millennial parents grandparents childcare, grandparents not helping with grandchildren, where did the village go parenting, millennial parenting struggles, grandparents babysitting grandchildren, childcare too expensive, parents can’t afford childcare, grandparents have their own lives, raising kids without family support, millennial parents no village, modern grandparents, grandparents boundaries grandchildren, dual income families childcare, family living far away, multigenerational families, parenting without grandparents, millennial mothers overwhelmed, cost of raising children, 8 At The Table #8AtTheTable #MillennialParents #Parenting #Grandparents #Childcare #Family #Millennials #TheVillage 🔔 Like what you’re hearing?
