Passionate watch collectors know that timepieces are a symbol of achievement or a commemoration of a significant moment in life. In the same way that vintage clothing tells an elaborate story, every watch is a motif that stands for something bigger. Style connoisseur Marcus Allen has been a collector for years, pouring his verve for storytelling into his clothing and accessory curation process.Allen founded The Society Archive in 2020, though he started the label over a decade prior. Allen and his team began accumulating pieces marked by precise craftsmanship, building a strong archive that highlights attention to detail. As a result, the team also built a close-knit community. When Allen isn’t putting work in with The Society Archive, you can find him creating vintage menswear content or working as a multifaceted creative director. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hypebeast @Hypebeast As an avid collector, Allen has a trained eye when it comes to picking out meaningful milestone pieces. “I started this archive in high school and have been collecting pieces ever since,” he expressed. “There’s an unspoken language about what we put on our bodies — whether it’s a timepiece or a great leather shoe — these decisions can put you in any place you want to be, socially.” Bringing us along, he walked us through his covetable collection of both fashion grails and watches with Watches of Switzerland, elaborating on special items that signify the ups and downs of his career journey.First, Allen presents the Watches of Switzerland OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M, designating this model as a reflection of his early career. The piece honors OMEGA’s dive watch heritage and is powered by a 9900 calibre movement. Designed for use underwater, it shows off Super-LumiNova coated indexes for visibility and a durable stainless steel case.“I feel like this watch is a piece I would have selected at the start of my career because it has much more presence and weight than other timepieces,” Allen shared. “It’s a much bolder model with the blue colorway, and I was just kind of YOLO-ing when I started my career and being very spontaneous. I feel like the Seamaster speaks to that.”Next, the creative pulled out the Watches of Switzerland Vintage and Pre-Owned Cartier Tank Basculante Mécanique – 150th Anniversary Limited Edition, labeling it as a marker of his current career era. The Cartier Tank is a classic model for the brand, but this one comes with its own distinct flair. It’s elevated by a guilloché dial and unique reversible case — and it’s limited to 150 pieces worldwide, making it a very rare find. “Every day I wear a Cartier watch — but this one is special. It’s super low profile as well, but when you see it, you know. It reflects where I’m currently at, since it’s much more refined and low profile, yet still versatile.”Lastly, Allen describes the Watches of Switzerland Vintage and Pre-Owned Patek Philippe Calatrava as his dream piece. The round watch with pure, clean lines is regarded as the quintessential wristwatch in the collector’s universe. It launched in 1932, and though many complications have been added since then, the piece remains timeless.“This felt like an ideal aspirational piece because it feels so grown,” the creative reflected. “It’s very understated from afar, but if you know what you’re looking at, it has connotations of success. I hope I’ll think that highly of myself in 20 years. The piece itself feels very solid as well, and I hope in the future I will have reached a point where I feel that I’ve accomplished all of the things I wanted.”On his future trajectory, Allen shared, “I’m working on a collection currently. I just hope to keep continuing to build upon what we have so far.” As a dedicated collector with a keen eye, Allen’s archive of both watches and rare fashion finds is sure to continue growing, mirroring his blossoming career.Check out Allen’s exclusive vintage clothing and watch collection in the video above.
