MacKenzie Scott has donated more than $1.34 billion to HBCUs and HBCU-supporting organizations, making her one of the most generous philanthropists in the sector’s history.

When Scott divorced billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, in 2019, she signed the Giving Pledge, a pact between the world’s richest people to give away more than half of their wealth.

“I have a disproportionate amount of money to share,” Scott wrote in in her pledge statement. “My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”

Since then, Scott has become widely recognized as one of the world’s most impactful philanthropists. Through Yield Giving, she has donated billions to more than 2,700 organizations, with a major focus on education, economic mobility, racial equity, and underfunded institutions.

    Disparities in Funding Higher Education

HBCUs play a fundamental role in advancing educational equality and economic mobility for African Americans. They account for 3% of all colleges and universities in the U.S. and award 13% of all bachelor’s degrees to black college graduates. Yet they have been historically neglected by both state and philanthropic funding.

A study by Candid revealed that, compared with similar higher education institutions, HBCUs received, on average, about two-thirds of the funds foundations donated. Even more, between 2015 and 2019, the average Ivy League institution received 178 times as much funding as the average HBCU.

With the Trump administration’s pullback from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, philanthropists like Scott are stepping in to ensure HBCUs aren’t left behind.

    Her Latest Donations

Scott’s most recent contributions have been generous and widespread. In 2025, she donated $70 million each to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the United Negro College Fund. Both organizations that provide scholarships for students in need.

Her direct institutional contributions in 2025 spanned across the country. Howard University received $80 million. Other major recipients included Morgan State University ($63 million), Bowie State University ($50 million), Norfolk State University ($50 million), Alabama State University ($38 million), Clark Atlanta University ($38 million), Dillard University ($19 million), and Alcorn State University ($42 million).

Then, in March 2026, Scott gifted $42 million to Elizabeth City State University during its Founders Day Convocation. The donation, which nearly tripled her earlier 2020 gift to the school, pushed her total HBCU giving past the $1 billion mark.

Through her giving, Scott has now reached more than 60 HBCUs, ranging from large research universities to smaller regional institutions.

How the Money is Making a Difference

What sets Scott’s philanthropy apart from the rest is that her copious donations are unrestricted. She practices “trust-based philanthropy,” allowing the institutions to use the money where they see fit. Spelman received $20 million from Scott in 2020 and invested the money in the college’s endowment and the Social Justice Fund, as well as giving a $ 3,500 scholarship to every student that year.

Scott’s charitable support for HBCUs is giving them the resources they need to upgrade facilities, hire competitively, and grow without waiting on donor approval or federal appropriations cycles.
