Nigerian music executive Ubi Franklin has opened up about the emotional struggles he faced during his failed marriage to actress Lilian Esoro, revealing that the experience pushed him to the point of attempting suicide.

Speaking in a video shared on his Instagram page, he recalled how he met Lilian on January 4, 2015, proposed to her just a few months later and organised a dinner at Eko Hotel to celebrate their engagement, only for her to leave the engagement ring behind and disappear.

“On the 4th of January 2015, that’s when I met my now ex-wife. I engaged her on the 19th of March 2015. After I engaged her, I set up a nice dinner at the Red Restaurant of the Eko Hotel. I invited all my friends, big boys, everybody. She didn’t turn up. She had dropped the ring and left.

“I was so embarrassed because it was a big thing on social media. Everybody was talking about it. Have you ever cried to a point where you cannot cry again? That’s where I was,” he said.

According to Ubi, Lilian later returned and explained that she had developed cold feet.

Although they travelled together afterwards, she reportedly left the engagement ring behind again after attending AY Live, before eventually returning months later to proceed with the wedding.

Despite eventually getting married, the relationship later ended, with the couple going their separate ways.

Reflecting on the painful period, Ubi revealed that he became deeply depressed and made several attempts to take his own life, but was rescued each time by his cousin.

Ubi, however, said there is no bitterness between him and Lilian today, noting that they remain good friends and co-parent their son peacefully.

According to him, the biggest lesson he learnt is that people should not hate others because a relationship fails, but rather learn from the experience and move on with life.
