Before ‘Call of My Life’ became a feature film headed to cinemas, it existed as three pages in Uzoamaka Power’s drafts.

Written in 2018, the draft sat untouched for years, a fragment of a story without a clear path to screen. At the time, Power hadn’t met Andrew Bunting, who would later become her co-lead and electrify everyone with their chemistry on and off the screen.

“Imagine that I was writing about you before I ever met you,” Power said to Bunting during a joint interview, reflecting on the connection that now anchors the film.

The fate of that draft changed during development conversations with producer Blessing Uzzi.

“We had been through so many drafts,” Power said. “And she asked if I had anything I hadn’t looked at in a long time.”

What Power found was the three-page document. What followed was a longer process of expansion, revision, and interrogation, led closely by Uzzi, who pushed the story beyond its initial form.

“She’s such a storyteller,” Power said. “She’ll drill you. And she did drill me, but I enjoyed every bit of the process.”

From that process came ‘Call of My Life’, a romantic comedy produced under Bluhouse Studios and directed by Dammy Twitch, now set for a nationwide cinema release on May 15.

The project brings together a cast that includes Power, Andrew Yaw Bunting, Zubby Michael, Nkem Owoh, Broda Shaggi, Patience Ozokwo, Beverly Osu, and Justin Ugonna.

‘Call of My Life’ reunites Power and Bunting following their earlier collaboration in ‘My Body, God’s Temple’. In this film, they play into a dynamic they describe as instinctive, something they carried over from previous work.

“It’s always easy to work with him,” Power said. “Every time I’m on set with him, it’s like I’m being myself.”

Bunting echoed the sentiment, describing their process as one that requires little adjustment. “You kind of just get on set and do your thing,” he said. “She makes it very easy.”

That familiarity carries into the film’s emotional core, showing their chemistry as a continuation of an already established rhythm.

‘Call of My Life’ is a Love Story Framed by Intention

Early reactions from the film’s red carpet suggest ‘Call of My Life’ is aiming for a visual identity that stands slightly apart from conventional romcom expectations.

Actors who attended the premiere pointed to the film’s design and tone as immediate standouts. Ruby Akubueze described it as “very out of the normal Nollywood style”, highlighting its set design and costuming, while Tomiwa Tegbe pointed to its “colourful” and “mushy” tone.

Beyond its aesthetics, the film’s framing of love also leans toward intentionality rather than fantasy. Beverly Osu, who appears in the film, described love as “intentional” and “work”, suggesting a grounding that contrasts with more exaggerated genre tropes.

For Twitch, ‘Call of My Life’ represents a shift from short-form visual storytelling into long-form narrative. While his music video work is often defined by pace and visual precision, the move to feature filmmaking introduces a different set of demands: character development, emotional continuity, and narrative structure over extended runtime.

His perspective on relationships, reflected in lighter moments during the film’s press run, offers a glimpse into the sensibility behind the film. Asked about what he values in a partner, Twitch pointed to kindness and a tongue-in-cheek emphasis on hygiene.

With its release set for May 15, Call of My Life arrives as both a romantic comedy and a debut test for Twitch’s transition into feature filmmaking. Anchored by a familiar on-screen pairing, the film positions itself at the intersection of visual ambition and character-driven storytelling.

Whether that transition holds across a full-length runtime will become clearer as audiences meet the film in cinemas.
