Patrick Pruitt, a Black high school graduate from Stockbridge, Georgia, has received admission offers from 264 colleges and universities across the country.

The 2026 Woodland High School graduate had applied to 270 colleges and was accepted by all but six – receiving scholarship offers worth more than $17 million. School officials believe the achievement could set a national record, surpassing the 231 acceptances previously held by Madison Crowell.

After weighing his numerous options, Pruitt has decided to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, to study environmental science. There, he received a financial package worth $260,000 over four years.

The Process and the Drive Behind It

Pruitt’s journey to 264 acceptances was methodical and intentional. Colleges first began reaching out to him during his sophomore year. While the College Board typically recommends applying to five to eight schools, Pruitt decided to reach for the stars.

He dedicated his free time to researching schools and completing applications with the support of his teachers and guidance counselors. In addition, he used the Common App and participated in the College Board’s Direct Admissions program to streamline the process.

Initially, he started with 50 applications, and as the admission letters kept coming, he decided to push even further. His routine included finding more colleges and filling out forms after school. Most of his application fees were waived.

“You want to open yourself up to as many opportunities as possible,” Pruitt said. “I just used what strengths I had to offer.”

    Setting Himself Up for Success

His academic profile gave him a strong foundation. Pruitt graduated in the top 10% of his class with a 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 4.2 weighted GPA, supported by advanced coursework. He also participated in dual enrollment through Henry County Schools’ Academy for Advanced Studies. With an SAT score of 1200, he was eligible for free tuition at any public college or university in Georgia. Beyond the classroom, Pruitt ran varsity cross country and track, and undertook an internship at the Henry County Water Authority.

His school counselor saw his success as the result of sustained effort, not luck. “Patrick Pruitt is proof of what can be achieved if you dig deep and seek opportunities,” said DeAnna Miller-Wooden. “We are all very proud of him.”

    A Potential National Record

Pruitt initially planned to apply to around 50 schools before turning the process into a personal challenge. He later set a goal of earning admission to 100 colleges. Then he learned about Madison Crowell, a 2024 graduate of Liberty County High School who was believed to hold a national record of 231 college acceptances. Pruitt decided to break the record and ultimately surpassed it by 33.

School officials believe the feat could set a national record. The scholarship offers placed Pruitt among a small group of students nationwide who have received multimillion-dollar scholarship offers during the college admissions process.

    Pruitt’s Advice to Future Applicants

For students preparing to navigate their own college journey, Pruitt keeps it simple: be yourself.

“Don’t try to sugarcoat anything,” he said. “Don’t try to over-impress, because if you do that, there’s no way it’s going to sound like you. Be the authentic, original person that you want to be. If you make efforts to do what you want to do, you have a great chance of being where you want to be in the near future.”
