A heated debate has erupted on social media after a Nigerian woman advised parents to stop encouraging their daughters to marry men who are not financially stable enough to provide comfort in today’s economy.

The lady, identified on X, argued that women should prioritise financial independence and avoid settling for men earning below ₦1 million monthly in 2026.

Her post quickly gained traction online, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians.

    Social Media Post Sparks Debate

In the viral post, she wrote: “Dear Nigerian parents, Stop forcing your daughters to marry ‘responsible’ men who can’t even afford AC in this heat. If he earns under 1 million monthly in 2026, let her stay single and build her own bag. ‘God will provide’ is not a salary slip.”

The statement triggered intense conversations about marriage, financial expectations, gender roles, and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

Many users supported the argument that economic realities have made financial stability an important factor in relationships. Others, however, criticised the post, saying marriage should not be reduced to income levels alone.

    Nigerians React Online

Reacting to the post, Prince Ofuoma criticised the growing financial expectations placed on men.

If that the case most women won’t marry and if those women get old will dey still keep the same energy hell no, please women stop dating people husband because if u get married and he date our take it as karma.”

Another user, Emmanuel, accused the lady of promoting materialism and dependency.

See your chicken brain. Later now, when men start commodifying women, you will be first to talk. So a woman is not human enough to use her own brain and make money that will bring her comfort abi!?”

Peter Ihesie also weighed in, warning against what he described as unrealistic standards.

Another upcoming single mom. You will learn new things and you will learn in hard way.”

Meanwhile, TAO offered a more balanced perspective, stressing that marriage is about partnership and mutual effort.

Marriage is actually an agreement between two matured adults to thug out life ‘together’. Modern world has set standards to it. A man and woman married should be striving to make the family a prosperous one.”
