If there could only be one word used to describe Prince, it would be electric.

With songs like “When Doves Cry” and “Kiss,” and films like Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon, the late-great performer always had a way of captivating fans with his creativity and storytelling capabilities. This same energy is true when it came to his iconic style across fashion and grooming.

Prince was always one to push the envelope in terms of “masculine” dressing. He often opted for silk presses, large hoop earrings, and heels. Grounding these accents usually were ruffled blouses, silk button downs, halter neck tops, and more.

At the 1985 Grammys, for example, Prince shut the house down with his signature lace blouse, which set the tone for his 80s era as a whole. Then, In the 90s, embellished blazers and bumped pixie cuts, as he rocked throughout his Diamonds and Pearls tour, were all the rage for the star.

Later In the 2010s, however, he was all about embodying the 70s with a modern touch: a classic afro and bell bottoms. See: his look at the 2015 Grammy Awards, where he paired his shimmery peach set with black stacked necklaces and a pair of retro shades.

In honor of what would have been his 68th birthday today, below, we’re taking a look back at some of his most aspirational style moments throughout his life. Prince’s approach serves as a reminder that the best styling choices are the ones that are unapologetically you.
