FIFA has suspended three Argentina players for their conduct after losing this year's World Cup final to Spain earlier on. Leandro Paredes received a 10-match ban, while Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven matches and Thiago Almada for one. Paredes’ punishment ranks among FIFA’s most severe World Cup-related sanctions, which was given after he clutched Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat before shoving Gavi to the ground. FIFA also fined Paredes and Molina US$90,000 each, while Almada was fined US$30,000. Paredes’ suspension could effectively keep him out of Argentina’s national team for about a year, with the country scheduled to play 10 matches through June 2027, potentially all friendlies. Spain’s Gavi was also handed a one-match suspension, while Argentina coach Roberto Ayala received a three-game ban and US$30,000 fine. The Argentine Football Association was fined US$110,000 for several World Cup incidents, including a political banner and discriminatory chants by fans, and ordered to spend another US$100,000 on anti-racism initiatives. Argentina had received US$34 million in World Cup prize money from FIFA. The AFA can challenge the longer suspensions and fines through FIFA’s appeal process and potentially take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a statement, the federation said: "The AFA legal department will, in a timely manner, request from FIFA the grounds for the reviewable rulings in order to file appeals with the governing body's appeal committee, while retaining the future option of appealing to the CAS as a final recourse."
