The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) iconic khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of sweeping reforms approved for the 53-year-old scheme.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this during a television interview, explaining that the move is intended to promote local textile production and boost Nigeria’s economy.

According to the minister, the new uniforms will be sourced from local Adire producers, particularly in states such as Ogun and Kwara, to strengthen indigenous industries and keep government spending within the country.

Beyond the uniform change, Olawande revealed that corps members will now be deployed based on their academic qualifications and career paths rather than the current general posting system.

He explained that graduates trained as teachers, for instance, would receive additional training during orientation camp before being posted to schools, making the scheme more structured and skill-driven.

The minister also said the government is reviewing deployment policies to allow corps members serve in areas they are more familiar with, especially in regions affected by insecurity.

He dismissed reports suggesting the military would be removed from the NYSC structure, stressing that their role in securing corps members remains unchanged.

In addition, the orientation programme has been extended to six weeks, with greater emphasis on entrepreneurship, vocational training, civic responsibility and employability.

The reforms, recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), are part of President Bola Tinubu’s plan to better equip young Nigerians with practical skills while supporting national development.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the proposed replacement of the NYSC khaki uniform with Adire.
