Fantasia is a mononym of many meanings. In music, her name means a free, instrumental composition. In play, it means imagination and fantasy. In beauty, however,  Fantasia feels synonymous with one iconic look: the pixie cut

Over the years, the singer’s pixie has been ever-evolving and, in every era, has defined her beauty signature. In 2004, when Fantasia was first discovered on American Idol, not one hair was out of place. Her hairline was precisely cut and pixie was short, spiked, and sprayed. By 2007, she dyed her hair gold to match her metallic makeup as seen on MTV’s Sucker Free. The following year, she grew her hair into a black pompadour with her sides shaved and blonde for the 50th GRAMMY Awards.

By the 2010s, her pixie spanned bowl cuts, jet black swoops, and even bright purple for Reginea Carter’s Sweet 16. In 2019, she attended LaQuan Smith’s New York Fashion Week show in low cut sides and a long jet black bang with just a a sliver of silver highlights to match her eyeshadow.

In the past few years, however, she’s returned to the natural color she started with over 20 years ago. Except, her style often references trends from almost 80 years before that. For example, at The Color Purple premiere, Fantasia wore 1920s kiss curls. Meanwhile, her latest look is reminiscent of the 1970s shag cut mullet: a wolf cut at the 14th Governors Awards.

In honor of Fantasia’s 42nd birthday, take a look at how her pixie cut has evolved over the years below.
