A man has raised alarm over the growing threat of counterfeit drugs after his brother developed severe kidney complications following treatment for malaria.

According to a viral social media post shared alongside photos from a hospital ward, the victim is currently receiving intensive medical care after reacting to medication administered for malaria treatment.

The post accused manufacturers and distributors of fake drugs of endangering lives across the country.

Family raises alarm over fake medication

This is my little brother. The malaria drug he was given led to his kidney issues. May God punish every single person involved in manufacturing fake drugs in Nigeria,” the relative wrote online.

The photos showed the patient lying on a hospital bed while attached to medical equipment believed to be used for dialysis treatment.

The family did not disclose the name of the hospital, the exact medication involved, or when the incident occurred.

This is heartbreaking. Nobody takes malaria drugs expecting to end up with kidney failure. We just want justice and stronger regulation so this doesn’t happen to another family,” the relative added.

Rising concerns over counterfeit drugs in Nigeria

Nigeria has repeatedly battled the circulation of fake and substandard drugs.

In previous years, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control warned that counterfeit medicines remain a major public health threat, especially in the treatment of malaria and other common illnesses.

Health experts have continued to urge Nigerians to purchase medications only from licensed pharmacies and hospitals to reduce the risks associated with unverified drugs.
