Dr. Umar Johnson fires back after Kevin Hart defends the Netflix roast on Breakfast Club, reacting to the George Floyd joke, Sheryl Underwood jokes and roast backlash. Dr. Umar Doesn’t Hold Back Addressing Kevin Hart Roast & Calls Out Comedians’ Disrespectful Jokes Dr. Umar Johnson sits down with Big Loon on It’s Up There and responds after Kevin Hart addressed the backlash from Netflix’s Roast of Kevin Hart during his Breakfast Club interview. Hart said Tony Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd joke was not tasteful to Black audiences, but argued that offensive racial humor is part of roast culture and that he should not be blamed for a joke he did not personally say. In this clip, Loon plays Kevin Hart’s response and asks Dr. Umar for his reaction. Umar pushes back by saying the issue is bigger than one George Floyd joke. He argues that if certain jokes could be removed or avoided, then George Floyd, slavery, lynching, and Black women should not have been left open as punchlines. The transcript also shows Umar focusing heavily on the Sheryl Underwood jokes and saying the roast became larger than Kevin Hart himself. The roast backlash also included criticism from George Floyd’s brother, criticism from Chelsea Handler toward Tony Hinchcliffe and Shane Gillis, and reports that some jokes were cut from the final Netflix version — including material connected to Melania Trump and Hinchcliffe.
