David O. David O. Russell's sports drama Madden, starring Nicolas Cage as the legendary football coach and commentator John Madden, is heading to Prime Video this fall. Amazon MGM, which is backing the film, has set it to arrive on the streamer November 18, with an awards-qualifying theatrical release expected earlier in the month. The film traces Madden's full arc as a defining figure in American football. He led the Oakland Raiders through repeated championship contention in the 1970s and delivered the franchise its first Super Bowl win, then retired from coaching in 1979 and spent the next three decades as a fixture of televised football as a color commentator. Russell's movie follows that career alongside two central relationships: Madden's friendship with Al Davis, played by Christian Bale, and his partnership with his wife Virginia, played by Kathryn Hahn. John Mulaney, Sienna Miller and Shane Gillis fill out the rest of the cast.Russell framed the project's ambitions when it was first announced in 2024. "[The] feature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s," the director said at the time. What remains less clear is the reasoning behind the streaming-first strategy. Russell carries serious awards pedigree as the filmmaker behind American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, which makes the decision to forgo a wide theatrical release notable. That said, Russell has long been a divisive presence in Hollywood, with a well-documented history of combative on-set conduct, and his most recent feature, 2022's star-packed period piece Amsterdam, was a costly box-office failure, taking in roughly $31 million USD worldwide against an $80 million USD budget and posting heavy losses for its studio.Madden is expected to play a limited, awards-qualifying theatrical run in early November before premiering worldwide on Prime Video November 18.
