The headlines keep telling us inflation is “cooling”, but for a lot of Black women in the UK, it still feels like financial warfare.

Rent is up. Food is up. Energy bills are still unpredictable. Wages have not kept pace, especially in sectors where Black women are overrepresented. So what does that leave us with? Hustle culture dressed up as empowerment.

Let’s call it what it is. Many of us are working two jobs, running side businesses, and still feeling one unexpected bill away from stress. This is not about poor money management. It is about structural pressure.

There is also a quiet expectation that we should just cope. Be resilient. Stretch. Make it work. But resilience without relief is just burnout in disguise.

And yet, we are still building. Still showing up. Still finding ways to support family and community, often without the safety nets others take for granted.

The conversation needs to shift from “how to budget better” to “why are we being asked to survive on less”. Until then, the reality will remain the same.

We are not struggling because we are doing something wrong. We are navigating a system that was not built with us in mind.
