Liverpool have begun discussions with Andoni Iraola over becoming the club’s next head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot.

The Reds are moving forward with plans to appoint a successor after parting ways with Slot just one year after he guided the club to the Premier League title.

According to reports, Iraola has emerged as Liverpool’s preferred candidate, with formal talks now underway as the club seeks a new direction ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The process is being overseen by sporting director Richard Hughes, who played a key role in appointing the Spaniard during his time at Bournemouth before later moving to Anfield.

Liverpool are understood to be focused on identifying a manager whose football philosophy aligns with the club’s long-term vision.

While the hierarchy are keen to make an appointment as quickly as possible, they are also determined to complete a thorough recruitment process.

No approaches have yet been made to potential members of a new coaching staff, with those discussions expected to take place only if negotiations with Iraola progress to an advanced stage.

Strong Bournemouth spell boosts Iraola’s credentials

Iraola strengthened his reputation during a successful spell at Bournemouth, where he transformed the Cherries into one of the Premier League’s most consistent teams.

The south coast club enjoyed an 18-match unbeaten run during the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, helping them secure a sixth-place finish and qualification for the Europa League.

Bournemouth also finished just three points behind Liverpool in the league standings, further enhancing Iraola’s credentials as one of the most highly-rated coaches in English football.

The 44-year-old is widely admired for his high-intensity style, tactical flexibility and ability to maximise the potential of his squad.

Liverpool are expected to continue talks in the coming days as they work towards appointing a new manager before the start of pre-season preparations.
