Boston Blue, CBS’s hit spinoff of the long-running Blue Bloods, is coming back for its sophomore season. The show returns Friday, October 9, picking up from a finale that left fans with plenty of unanswered questions. Season 1 ended with Detective Lena Silver’s boyfriend Brian Rodgers landing in the Charles River after a truck intentionally rammed his car into the water, his fate unknown. Lena herself was also shot on the job. A new promo shows a shaken Danny Reagan at her hospital bedside. “Thank you for being there,” Lena whispers. “Always,” Danny replies. Season 2 will feature a small time jump to get Lena and Danny back on the streets together, but the showrunners promise the blanks from that final night will be filled in. “Who was driving that grey truck, what was that about, and where are they now?” co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier said. Meanwhile Danny is taking the sergeant’s exam and makes clear to his former partner Maria Baez that he is done taking it slow, with Baez eventually making her way to Boston, though not without first untangling her life in New York. Mae Silver faces a contentious re-election battle against a politically ruthless opponent, and Lena meets her biological father for the first time. The series follows Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, a former NYPD detective who joined the Boston Police Department to reconnect with his son Sean, played by Mika Amonsen, and is partnered with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green. One of the show’s signature touches is its own reimagining of the beloved Blue Bloods family dinner tradition, here rendered as a Friday night Shabbat dinner for the Silver family. The main cast includes Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver and Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver. Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez also recur in their Blue Bloods roles as Erin Reagan and Maria Baez. Boston Blue led all CBS Friday night programming in viewership during its first season and holds an 82 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is produced by CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, with Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis co-showrunning and executive producing alongside Wahlberg, Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed. Boston Blue Season 2 premieres October 9 on CBS. Season 1 is streaming now on Paramount+.
