Nollywood actor Laide Olabanji has stirred reactions across Nigeria after making a blunt assessment of political campaigning in the country, alleging that many supporters of the present government are motivated purely by financial gain.

    Actor criticises political campaign motivations

The actor made the remarks while speaking on the state of political loyalty and citizen participation in governance, a conversation that has continued to trend on social media platforms.

His comments come as public discourse intensifies over political accountability and voter engagement following the last election cycle in Nigeria.

All the people campaigning for the present government now, if the government calls them and tells them that there’s no money on ground for them, they won’t see anybody again. All of them are campaigning because of the money, it’s only because of thier pocket”

Social media reacts to explosive claim

Following the remarks, reactions have continued to trail the actor’s statement, with many Nigerians taking to social media to debate the influence of money in political mobilisation.

The discussion also revived memories of the 2023 general elections campaign period, when several political analysts and civil society groups raised concerns about vote-buying and financially driven endorsements.

While some users agreed with Olabanji’s assertion, arguing that political loyalty is often transactional, others defended campaigners, insisting that participation in politics is not always financially motivated.
